[ARCHIVED] Armed Robbery at Rifle Rest Area

An armed robbery occurred on July 22, 2021, at about 12:11AM in the Lyon’s Pond rest area in Rifle. A male approached the victim, brandished a knife, and demanded money. The suspect left on foot without taking anything from the victim. The victim was not injured.

The suspect is described as a male, dark hair and approximately 5’8”-5’10” tall. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, tennis shoes and jeans. His face was partially covered.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or saw anything suspicious is encouraged to call the Rifle Police Department at 970-665-6500 and ask to speak to a detective or supervisor. After 5:00PM, please call 970-625-6524.

When a flash flood warning is issued for Glenwood Canyon, 1-70 through the canyon will be shut down due to the possibility of mudslides from the Grizzly Creek Fire burn scar. As a result, traffic will be diverted off of I-70 and onto Highway 13 via exit 87 for a detour up through Meeker and Steamboat Springs. This has already occurred several times this year and has caused an increase in visitors to the Lyon’s Pond rest area.

Citizens are encouraged to be extra vigilant regarding their surroundings when at any rest area. Remember to park in well- lit areas, stay in groups whenever possible and report suspicious activity.
