[ARCHIVED] Five Seats Up For Grabs on Rifle City Council

Running to be a City Council Member

Election season is rapidly approaching and the City of Rifle City Council will have five seats open this year. Mayor Barbara Clifton and Mayor Pro Tem Teresa Hamilton have reached their term limits and are not eligible to run for office again in this election cycle. Councilors Sean Strode, Joe Carpenter, and Clint Hostettler will need to run if they wish to remain in office.

Becoming a City Council member is a great way to serve your community by helping shape and institute positive change for the future.   The City has five at-large seats. Four seats are for four-year terms. The fifth seat is only for two years. Of the five winning candidates, the one with the smallest amount of votes will receive the two-year term seat.

Anyone interested in running for City Council may pick up a candidate packet at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall.  Every registered elector eighteen years of age or older on the date of the election who has resided in Rifle for at least twelve consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election is eligible to circulate a nominating petition.  Applicants interested in running for City Council must come to the City Clerk’s office in City Hall, 202 Railroad Avenue, to pick up one of these packets.  It contains the necessary campaign documents

Petitions for candidacy from this packet may be circulated from August 3, 2021, through August 23, 2021.  They must be returned to the Rifle City Clerk’s office no later than the end of the business day on August 23, 2021.  The Garfield County election is on November 2, 2021.
